FAQ

Fabric Information and Care

I'm so happy to be able to offer my scarves in three fabric choices. The fabrics are quite different, although it's hard to distinguish them in words! The poly chiffon and 100% silk are probably most familiar in feel and texture; the silk modal is a newer fabric type—a wonderfully soft and easy-to-wear addition to your wardrobe! I have added an image at the bottom of this page to help you choose a scarf fabric.

What is silk habotai fabric?

Silk habotai scarves offer the classic soft sheen of 100% silk with a texture similar to that of luxury brands. This 100% silk perfectly portrays the luminous quality of my artwork. A luxurious and lightweight fabric, it drapes delicately and is finished with a machine-rolled baby hem.

How do I care for silk habotai fabric?

First wash: Machine-wash gently in cold water with ½ cup of vinegar and 2 tsp salt for the first wash. Fill the washing machine with water (no eco-cycle). Machine-dry delicate or hang to dry. Can be ironed on a silk setting.

Subsequent washes: Cold machine wash or hand wash with a mild detergent. Add a mild softener to restore lost softness during the wash cycle. Do not bleach.

Note: Carolyn recommends always hand washing and hang drying your delicate silk scarf.

What is silk modal fabric?

Silk modal is made from a 15% silk and 85% beechwood modal fabric. Modal itself is a biodegradable, semi synthetic fabric, made from spinning beechtree cellulose. Modal is durable, washes well, and its wrinkle-resistant qualities make it an easy fabric to take care of and wear.

Combining silk and modal makes the fabric more durable than 100% silk, and creates a subtle textured look that feels warmer to the touch than straight silk. You will love the soft touch and  delicate drape of this fabric combination that’s just perfect for scarves!

Note: Due to more textured fibres, color vibrancy is more muted on the reverse side of silk modal than on the 100% silk habotai. This difference in color intensity is more apparent the darker the design, but does not detract from the beauty of the scarf. Please see the sample image at the bottom of this page.

What is poly chiffon fabric?

Poly Chiffon (polyester chiffon ) is a slightly translucent, plain-woven fabric that is breathable, soft, light-weight, and flowing. It is manufactured from 100% polyester fibers that hold color vibrancy.

Note: The poly chiffon has a difference in color intensity on the reverse side; however, this is offset by the transparency of the fabric and is not really evident when wearing the scarf. Please see the sample image at the bottom of this page.
